Entertainment news journalist and TV personality Samantha Harris says she was stunned and heartbroken when she received a breast cancer diagnosis after discovering a lump during a self-exam.

“It took a second … more than a second to really take it all in,” she says.

As she recovered from double mastectomy surgery, and still reeling from the emotional effects of undergoing cancer treatment, Samantha’s husband, Michael, consoled her with the well-known adage, “When life gives you lemons, you have to make lemonade.”

With those words, Samantha was inspired to create a space for other breast cancer survivors, as well as others battling their own trials and tribulations, to share their experiences and provide support to each other. Her website, GottaMakeLemonade.com, aims to inspire positivity in the face of adversity.

“People share really personal things that have happened in their lives,” Samantha says. “That was so uplifting to me and helped me get through my recovery.”

In October 2014, Samantha announced to the public that she was cancer-free, though she will continue to be monitored for the rest of her life and remain on estrogen-blockers to prevent future occurrences.

“Changing attitudes from one of dismay into positivity actually improves health outcomes,” ER physician Dr. Travis Stork says.
